Can you believe the end of this calendar year is swiftly approaching? In the post-holiday tizzy we are moving slowly, intentionally, and softly - we hope you are too. While our community and listenership spans across all areas of the globe, the For The Wild team is in the thick of winter. There is something so engrossing about the cold days and dark nights we are in the midst of currently. They gift us clarity, fortitude, and sometimes, if we’re lucky, deep hibernation. Changes in 2023


For The Wild released its first podcast episode back in September of 2014 under the program name Unlearn and Rewild, we’ve been so blessed to create and curate our weekly episodes as offerings to the times in which we live over the past eight years. We’re so proud of the episodes, zines, live events, and short films we have created and are blown away by the ways in which our conversations have contributed to organizations, movements, and bodies of work far beyond ourselves–it truly does feel like the mycorrhizal network of our wildest dreams. We remain in deep gratitude to our guests who have simultaneously comforted and stretched us, as well as to you, our listeners, for accompanying us on this journey.

In an effort to continue this work and support our small but mighty team of four, we are enhancing our 2023 offerings.

Beginning in January all episodes released to the public via our website, digital streaming services, and radio syndicates will be standard episodes under an hour. Episodes that exceed an hour in length will be available on Patreon.

We will be organizing a series of live hangouts between guests, friends of the Podcast, and Ayana. These live hangouts will be available to our Patreon supporters. We’re excited to announce that our first hangout will be with Sophie Stand in late January. We're also creating a series of digital zines that will be released via Patreon.

Slow Study: We Will Dance With Mountains: Into the Cracks!

This year we were honored to launch our first ever Slow Study course in collaboration with Bayo Akomolafe. Bayo was a guest on For The Wild, for the first time, back in January of 2020, we’ve cherished his challenging thought process ever since and were elated to co-collaborate on this special offering.

This Slow Study is a series of lectures and practice prompts from Bayo’s 2021 global course – We Will Dance With Mountains: Into the Cracks! – edited into a learning journey for you to explore from your home at your own pace. The curriculum includes one 80-page digital course book with emergent curriculum, articles, and artwork, seven audio files with over five hours of listening content, and seven transcripts of the audio files in PDF format. This year we launched transmedia project CAN I GET A WITNESS in partnership with Lead to Life and Sitka Conservation Society. β€œFollowing black feminist scholar Tiffany King’s text, The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies, CAN I GET A WITNESS is a transmedia project that traces two queer black latinx femmes (brontΓ« velez & Stephanie Hewett) dancing before, and being danced by, the ecology, memory and stories of the Tongass National Forest and Glacier Bay in Southeast Alaska (unceded Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian territories).


Scored by field recordings and music by cellist/acoustic ecologist Jiordi Rosales and interviews from the For The Wild podcast with Tiffany Lethabo King (interviewed by brontΓ« velez), Wanda Kashudoha Culp and Kasyyahgei (matriarchal Tlingit elders and lifelong forest defenders of the Tongass & Glacier Bay interviewed by Ayana Young), the film and constellated media utilizes "dance as a grammar" (Tiffany King) to hold the complexity of it's narrative: tracing connections between melting ice in Alaska and the disappearing Caribbean, the separation of black and indigenous relations, and the critical suture that: black and indigenous femme survival requires the earth's health and "the land's refusal to be separated from flesh" (L.H. Stallings).”

β€œWe learned about the phrase groundtruthing during our travels across SE Alaska with sailors, Erik DeJong, Frances Brann and Heather Bauscher, who so graciously donated their time to craft the travel that ensured we could bear witness to the land with safety and enchantment. They made sure to design a trip that ensured the land could  enchant us to dedicate our efforts to their and their people’s protection and care. 

Groundtruthing has a host of meanings but the sailors used the language to describe interrogating what data or information had been collected about specific sites against information collected and intuited from one own’s personal presence and experience to verify those statistics, data and information. 

This opening offering is our groundtruthing of being encountered by the Tongass. This groundtruthing oracle is our land acknowledgment that protecting the Tongass is not a siloed conservationist endeavor but tied up with the lifeways of the Tlingit, Haida and Tshmishian peoples. The Tongass will not be protected if there is not also atonement and reparations for the impacts and harms of settler colonialism, the tourism-industrial complex, extraction, racialized capitalism, indigenous displacement and genocide, utilizing black folks as surrogates to continue the military project in Alaska and further separate black and indigenous relations. Our friends at advaya are offering an incredible 6-week live online course, featuring some very dear previous guests of For The Wild. This course runs January 31- March 7, 2023, with meetings happening every Tuesday from 6-8pm GMT. Sessions are recorded in case participants miss them live, and participants can catch up in their own time.
