Rooting the conversation in her experience as both a birth and death doula, Amy details the deep work of holding space for all of life’s moments. Amy points out the thresholds of everyday life, and the value in sitting with uncertainty. Companioning, storytelling, and ritual making are all vital as we come to contemplate what it means to hold space for death. Offering breathing techniques and a meditation on the breath that holds us between birth and death, Amy calls to mind the importance of making space for contemplation. Continuing the conversation series, “The Edges in the Middle,” presented in collaboration with UC Berkeley’s Othering and Belonging Institute, For The Wild is delighted to share Báyò Akómoláfé, Naomi Klein and Yuria Celidwen. Speaking about climate grief and hope, Báyò, Naomi, and Yuria build together to consider the value in tapping into the depth of emotion as we feel it, not as we are told we should feel it. In a time marked by disruption, loss, and demise, grief may be an invitation into depths that demand to be listened to, and as we embody the grieving process we are called to surrender to feeling. Combating the idea that we must perform hope and instead pointing out hope as a carceral thing when it prevents us from feeling the spectrum of emotions, Bayo, Naomi, and Yuria instead turn to the idea that we might find solace within the web of our relations - both human and more-than-human. The identity of the collective web highlights our ecological belonging. What forms of life and narrative may emerge and transition as we move towards stories of belonging? This conversation contemplates the waves of grief and gratitude that mark our lives. In order to change, we must surrender, and with this we must find ways to make space and sanctuary for the transition. As we settle into the composting of old frameworks and the emergence of something else entirely, how do we treat one another as we fall down and falter together?

In an increasingly unequal and precarious world, how might we come to combat disconnection and disillusionment? In this episode, guest Cuck Collins dives deeply into the world of wealth hoarding and staggering inequality. Recognizing the complexity of these issues, Ayana and Chuck engage deeply with questions of philanthrocapitalism, tax spending, the wealth defense industry, and power inequities across society.
Chuck explains that as wealth concentrates in fewer and fewer hands it perpetuates and increases anti-democratic values and economic instability, leading to uncertain and uneven futures. This growing inequality is deeply intertwined with the capitalist extraction that has led to the climate crisis. As the fossil fuel industry has worked to shape public response to the climate crisis through denial, doubt, and delay, it is clear that the politics of our times are ensnared within corporate interest and greed. At the same time, the climate crisis calls us to reckon with our value systems and to question the cultural conditionings by which we have been surrounded. It is delusional to think that even the wealthiest among us will be able to escape climate crisis entirely. Instead of relying on broken and untrustworthy systems, how can we seed a new economy of solidarity as we work to live within Earth’s boundaries?

As many of you know, we have had the joy of working closely with Dr. Bayo Akomolafe on several of his projects, and now, we are so excited to announce that registration for Bayo’s 2023’s live course entitled “We Will Dance with Mountains: Vunja!” is now live. For The Wild is partnering with We Will Dance with Mountains to spread the word about the live version of this course. We Will Dance With Mountains is a carnivalesque course in postactivism, a matter of fissures, fault lines, cracks, openings, seismic shifts, endings, and fugitive marronage. The course is about recuperating our connections with a ‘world’ that can no longer be seen as dormant, mute and passive. It is about coming to new senses, and co-generating new practices of place-making in partnership with the more-than-human world. The online course/festival will include talks led by Dr. Báyò Ákómoláfé, teachings by revered guest teachers (including V, Sophie Strand, Dr. Erin Manning and many more), dancing and cooking together, eating together, playing with children, making sanctuary, exercises, one-on-one encounters, regional meetups and local gatherings of practice, musical and theatrical performances, weaving rituals, gathering and creating new assemblages of power together.
