Harvest time is a time of falling. Seeds falling back to the earth, ripe fruit falling to the ground, the sun falling closer and closer to the horizon. What will catch us as we fall? 

At For The Wild, we have been lucky to have so many enriching conversations detailing the ways we can hold each other and be held through rights of passage, through the composting of old and broken systems, and through the change inherent in this seasonal life. What is life at the edges of ecosystems, at the moments of convergence? In this week’s episode, guest Obi Kaufmann introduces listeners to his understanding of consilience – emphasizing the importance of art and science in sacred relationship. 

Obi shares in a reverie about what California has been and could be, and in doing so, he invites guests to imagine a world where we recognize nature as the undeniable truth of who we are. Discussing his signature field atlases, Obi shares a longing to understand the whole of a place – not just the marquee places, but the systems and interconnections that keep the earth pulsing with life. JASON BALDES on Buffalo and Land Rematriation /350

Bringing us to the Wind River Reservation, this week’s guest, Jason Baldes, shares his work to bring back wild Buffalo to Wind River and to rematriate land to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes. Jason offers his deep wisdom about the ecological, spiritual, and cultural importance of buffalo, detailing the health benefits of eating buffalo, the ecological benefits of their migration and grazing, and the healing benefits of connection to these animals. 

Jason’s work with the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative has already had an immense effect. This was the first time in 139 years that the Shoshone tribe was able to take their own animals from their own lands for their annual Sundance ceremonies. A reciprocal relationship with buffalo, not one based on commodification or profit can be the base of a healthier relationship to the land. 

The physical and cultural landscape of the so-called United States is steeped in a colonial worldview, but work like Jason’s is changing the tides and aligning conservation with long-standing Indigenous values. This healing work honors those ancestors who had buffalo, land, and ritual stolen from them by the United States government.

STEPHEN JENKINSON on a Lucid Reckoning /349

 β€œWe’re not trying to be right. We’re trying to see if we can see clearly.” In this agile and authentic episode, returning guest Stephen Jenkinson offers a lucid view of the world. How might our understanding of the world change if we approached life with a willingness to see things as they are rather than a need to only affirm that which we desire? Stephen reminds us β€œmeaning is not as scarce as we would make it out to be,” explaining that even though the muck and mire of our existence may not be the meaning that we search for, they are meaningful nonetheless. We all have the chance to make meaning out of and within each other’s lives. How can we pay reverence to the consequences of this responsibility? 

Ayana and Stephen journey together to consider what had brought us to this modern time – prompting vital questions about the value of tradition, the importance of strangerhood, the possibility of reckoning, and the meaning of ancestry. Stephen asks questions that disrupt and unsettle the status quo, and perhaps these questions will lead us to the lessons we so deeply need. Who are we beyond the shorthand of familiarity? Calling out our culture’s addiction to mastery and self-determination, Stephen dares us to consider what our culture truly is, and simultaneously offers us the opportunity to dream towards what it could be.
