Rosemary Gladstar calls forth deep gratitude and mindfulness for the plant world as she walks with us through the world of herbalism in this precious episode. Reminding listeners of the value of connecting to the wellspring of Earth, Rosemary contemplates the ways plants shape us and make us companions when we work with them. Alongside this, Rosemary considers the ways paying deep attention to the world invites us to a place of radical grief and love. How do we acknowledge change, and choose to love in spite of harsh circumstances? 

Woven throughout the conversation is an understanding that the Earth has a destiny of its own, one we cannot completely comprehend within our human lifespans. Though we may not see or understand the end results of our actions, Rosemary highlights the value of listening to your calling and taking bold action while simultaneously surrendering control back to the Earth. 

Rosemary Gladstar has been practicing, living, learning, teaching and writing about herbs for over 50 years. Considered a star figure in the modern herbal movement and often referred to as the β€˜godmother of American herbalism’. Rosemary is the author of twelve books including Medicinal Herbs: a Beginners Guide, Herbal Healing for Women, Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Well Being and Herbal Healing for Men.

Grounding this conversation within Teotitlan del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico, guest Samuel Bautista Lazo, brings listeners into an insightful conversation on the value of craftwork that connects us to the past and plants seeds for the future. Here, Samuel outlines the weaving traditions of the Benizaa people, offering insight into a trade and lifeway shaped intimately by ancestry and the land. Through his family’s weaving business, Samuel emphasizes the importance of creating connection and meaning with the objects we need to sustain life. In an age of mass alienation and mass consumption, intimately knowing our relationship to the objects that sustain, to the skilled labor that creates, and to the land that provides is a radical act. How might we cultivate such connections within our lives? 

Dr. Samuel Bautista Lazo is a Benzaa (Zapotec) weaver from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico. In 2013 he obtained his PhD in Engineering from the University of Liverpool in the UK, doing research in the topic of Sustainable Manufacturing. After obtaining his PhD in the UK, Samuel decided to go back home and connect back with his community and family weaving heritage. Being back home struck a chord in his life and made him realize that his community was already practicing an ancient form of Sustainable Manufacturing that is still alive in the many craft traditions of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca and the eight regions in his state. From this place, Samuel has rooted even more within his community and family weaving business and from there and through the language of the ancient textiles he spends a great deal of time teaching, educating and planting the seeds for creating a future that heals the relationship of humans with the web of life.

The design came in a dream of Luis Lazo, he has won several awards with his weavings but this time he made a rug to teach his son the freestyle form of weaving in a way that combines intuitive weaving and classical geometrical shapes; in this rug we can see how the more organic round shapes take over the classical Zapotec geometrical desings just like after sunset, our rubeΓ¦z awareness (Nahual, intuitive, dream) take over our perception and takes us into the dream world. The patterns of nature that we learn in the day time will serve us as guides to navigate the ephimeral and non linearity of the spirit world; colors and shapes dissolve into their pure esscence so we can perceive energy in its more natural flow, not processed by the logical mind but by the feel of our intuition and inner knowldge. This is why we can never describe a dream using words because words do not belong in that realm, dreams are lot linear nor logical bu they have their own language that has a direct impact into the awake world…”
